Sugar has become public enemy number 1. The controversy surrounding it, which started with an incriminating piece written by Dr. Robert H. Lustig in the New York Times which pretty clearly stated that sugar is what’s making America fat, has spread out to the public at large. But its not that simple, we live in a world that surrounds us with sugar. Is it all bad? What about fruit? Are there things I can do to help stave off some of the negative effects fruit has on my body? Here is a list of 8 things you need to understand about sugar so you can start making your own decisions.

1. All Sugars are NOT the same.

There are several chains to sugar, Fructose, Glucose and Lactose being the big ones you encounter and should understand. In the same way that all calories are equal, all sugars are not equal. Fructose is by fat the most laborious on the body and the one responsible for making people fat. Fructose taxes the liver and is easily converted to fat. Fructose is found heavily in fruits and somewhat in vegetables, but the real issue with fructose is its insertion into processed fat free foods and table sugar (table sugar is half fructose and half glucose). An apple doesn’t hurt you, a Snickers bar on the other hand does. If you want to help yourself lose weight, lose the fructose. If you are looking for a replacement, try Glucose. Many stores sell it (or go online) and although its not as sweet as Fructose, you will get used to it and it will go a long ways in helping you lose weight.
